Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)
Motherwort, or Leonurus cardiaca, is a revered herb with a long history in traditional wellness practices, especially for heart health and women's well-being. Its name, derived from "lion-hearted" (Leonurus cardiaca), hints at its traditional use for courage and strength. Beyond its physical applications, Motherwort is deeply entwined with emotional support and metaphysical properties.
Physical Benefits
Cardiovascular Health
Traditionally considered a heart tonic, Motherwort is used to strengthen the heart and regulate heartbeat. It can help lower blood pressure and alleviate heart palpitations often associated with anxiety or stress.
Women's Health
This herb is a traditional uterine tonic, believed to tone and strengthen the uterus, potentially reducing menstrual cramping and supporting overall reproductive health. It can also help regulate menstrual cycles and alleviate associated discomforts. Traditionally used for postpartum support, it's thought to aid in uterine recovery and reduce bleeding. Some research indicates it might be beneficial in reducing postpartum blood loss, especially after C-sections. Motherwort may also help manage menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.
Anxiety and Stress Relief
Motherwort possesses nervine properties, which can help soothe the nervous system and reduce feelings of nervousness and anxiety. It may have mild sedative effects that promote relaxation and aid sleep. Limited animal studies also suggest potential benefits in reducing anxiety and depression symptoms.
Other Benefits
Motherwort contains plant compounds with antioxidant properties, protecting against cell damage, and research suggests it may help reduce inflammation. As a bitter herb, it can also stimulate digestion and help with appetite loss due to nervousness.

HOW TO USE
Basic Infusion:
For a standard tea, steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried motherwort in a cup of boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Cover the cup while steeping to prevent the loss of volatile compounds, then strain and drink.
Stronger Tea (Decoction):
To extract deeper flavors and compounds, simmer 2 teaspoons of dried motherwort in a cup of water for 15-20 minutes.
Notes:
- Motherwort tea can be quite bitter. You can add honey, lemon juice, or other flavorings to improve the taste.
- A general daily recommendation is around 4.5g of dried herbs, or two cups of tea daily.
- Infusions are best for delicate parts of the plant like leaves and flowers.
To Make a Dried Herb Tincture:
- Combine 1 part dried motherwort with 2 parts high-proof alcohol(like vodka or brandy) in a clean glass jar.
- Seal the jar and shake it well.
- Infuse the mixture in a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks, shaking occasionally.
- Strain the tincture and transfer it to amber glass bottles for storage.
Notes:
- Dried herb tinctures typically use a 1:5 ratio of herb to 60% alcohol.
- Tinctures are potent, so dosages are smaller, usually around 20-30 drops, 3 times a day.
Other Uses
- Powdered Herb: You can use small amounts of powdered motherwort in herbal spice blends or savory dishes.
- Infused Oil: Create a soothing infused oil by steeping dried motherwort in a carrier oil for topical use in massages or balms.
- Herbal Bath: Add dried motherwort directly to your bathwater for a relaxing and aromatic experience.
