Cleavers (Galium aparine)
Cleavers is a delicate but tenacious plant named for its tiny hooked bristles that allow it to cling—or “cleave”—to nearby plants, animals, and clothing. Often found in meadows and along hedgerows, this spring herb has a long-standing reputation as a gentle cleanser and tonic. Traditionally used to support the lymphatic system and promote healthy skin, cleavers is known for its cooling, soothing properties and is often brewed into herbal teas or infusions during seasonal transitions.
In folk herbalism, cleavers is also regarded as a plant of release and renewal, often used in rituals for cleansing, banishing, or letting go of what no longer serves. Its sticky nature is symbolically associated with binding intentions or drawing desired outcomes close.
